And if that isn’t enough to make sure he keeps her at arm’s length, they have busted the case and he’s in hiding until the trial, since he’s a principal witness. The last thing he wants to do is get involved with a beautiful, young woman offering him friendship. He has nightmares and feels that he is not worthy now of anything. He’s had to do some horrific things in order not to blow his cover and it’s deeply affected him. He has been working undercover for the ATF as a motorcycle gang member. Right from the beginning, Kyle is a Most Excellent Hero – and I do say Hero with a capital H. It isn’t long before she brings him a “welcome to the neighborhood” basket of unintentionally badly baked muffins.īut Kyle Sommerville wants nothing to do with her or her muffins. So when she notices a hot new neighbor who is tending to the lighthouse near her home, she sits up and takes notice. The heroine of Finding Kyle, Jane Cresson, lives in a small town where there isn’t an abundance of young, single men. This book turned out to be a positive reading experience. So it’s almost with a sense of adventure when I start a new Sawyer Bennett book. Much of the time it’s because I have issues with the heroine. But then on occasion I read one to which I have a very negative reaction. Charles Addams was first inspired by his home town of Westfield, New Jersey, an area full of ornate Victorian mansions and archaic graveyards. According to the film version, the family credo is, Sic gorgiamus allos subjectatos nunc (pseudo-Latin: "We gladly feast on those who would subdue us"). Many other "Addams families" exist all over the world. The family appears to be a single surviving branch of the Addams clan. The house is a wreck, of course, but this is a house-proud family just the same and every trap door is in good repair. Many of the troubles they have as a family are due to Grandma’s fumbling, weak character. A closely knit family, the real head being Morticia-although each of the others is a definite character - except for Grandma, who is easily led. Morticia is even in disposition, muted, witty, sometimes deadly. The characters were undeveloped and unnamed until later versions. Addams's original cartoons were one-panel gags. 5/13/2023 0 Comments Gods and Generals by Jeff ShaaraWe follow Winfield Scott Hancock, a Captain of Quartermasters who is assigned command of a brigade of infantry, quickly establishing himself as one of the finest leaders in the Union army. 'On Chesil Beach' is an extraordinarily risky undertaking for a novellist at what some mistakenly believe is at his best (they're wrong, of course: there's better to come). All these are great writers, but McEwan is head and shoulders above them. He is sharper than Julian Barnes, more aware of life's strangeness than Sarah Waters and he tackles deeper themes than Joanne Harris. A natural successor to Greene and GoldingĪs if there was ever any serious doubt, Ian McEwan's 'On Chesil Beach' clearly establishes his reputation once and for all as the greatest English novelilst since the deaths of Graham Greene and William Golding. 5/13/2023 0 Comments The marvelous land of oz bookNeill, revealing his first visions of Oz. Buck’s story, which was engrossing in every way. ” as I read, I re-grounded myself in his purpose and in my purpose, and then went back to Mr. I, on the other hand, have been limited to writing about the trail as it existed in 1847-the year my fictional wagon train heads to Oregon. He includes accounts of the Mormon migration and influence, the Gold Rush years, and the Pony Express. Buck could recount the entire history of the Oregon Trail, from Lewis and Clark through the 1890s. I had to remind myself as I read that Mr. It was a good counterpoint for me as I worked my way through my novel, giving me a foil against which either to confirm what I wrote about my emigrants or to understand why my account differed from what the Bucks experienced. Rinker Buck’s book is part memoir, part history, part travelogue, and part social commentary. As an adult, Nick was a master mechanic and muleskinner. Their family background gave them unique skills to tackle this endeavor-their father had taken them on many covered wagon rides in the East when they were growing up. Buck and his brother Nick drove a covered wagon powered by three mules from Kansas to Oregon in 2011. While I was spending hours each day deep in my novel, I read each evening from The Oregon Trail: A New American Journey, by Rinker Buck. It still needs some tweaking, but the book is essentially done. I have immersed myself in the nineteenth century over the last few weeks, editing my Oregon Trail novel for what I hope has been the final big push. However, I didn’t feel that was the message at all. I was expecting duel narration, it seemed like he should get more time to fully understand his perspective.Ī lot of people seemed to think the book had a message of “be yourself, but still change to make yourself more desirable to other people”. I thought Abelard was not as fully fleshed out as he could have been, he felt like more of a secondary character than I was expecting, which disappointed me. The flirting between Lily and Abelard is so cute and relatable. I also loved the use of seemingly gibberish words to represent Lily’s comprehension issues, I thought that was a very creative way of showing that without being overly obvious as to what was happening. I thought the use of quotes in the book was really well done and showed a lot about the characters without being overbearing. This is made better by the fact that the author herself is a woman with ADHD, so it’s even Own Voices! I personally do not have ADHD, but some people in my family have inattentive ADHD, so I do have some experience with it. I think it’s unusual to see a book with a protagonist with ADHD at all, but specifically a female protagonist.) and a boy with Asperger’s. I love that this book features both a girl with ADHD (which is so rarely shown in books. This is possibly the first time I've read a book cowritten by two authors who are each well-known and have distinctive styles in their own right, so I was interested to see how much it feels like a Pratchett book and how much like a Gaiman book. Written by comedic writers Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman, its primary function is indeed to amuse: the writing style owes much to other great British humorists such as P.G.
